Thanks to the city's delightful collection of small inns, Alamos has some good dining options from traditional Mexican cuisine to a mix of European flavors. Nightlife in Alamos is understandably subdued. Try to catch an evening Estudiantina performance during your stay. They periodically play at several of the hotels in the evening and are
usually present for all Christmas and New Year festivities.
Street Vendors
Many different home cooked traditional Mexican foods are available at a multitude of stands in and around the Plaza Alameda, Plaza de Las Almas and Arroyo de Aduana in central city. These food stands are by permit only from the local government and cannot operate unless they meet the State of Sonora health standards. Each stand has its position and times of day that they may operate.
You will find tantalizing things such as roasted ears of corn with numerous condiments such as chili powder, cream, margarine, mayonnaise, grated cheese etc. (not a tender corn) or you can try a "cocktel de elote" (a cup of corn in a liquid broth with cream to which you add the condiment of your choice. Daily one may find "Bar-ba-coa" which is a little like a beef stew with chili, shrimp cocktails, Birria (a beef soup with veggies), Menudo, Posole, varieties of tamales, green corn tamales, Carne Asada with roasted onions and chilies. A wide range of taco stands offer beef, pork, fish and shrimp tacos around the Plaza Alameda. You can try a Mexican hotdog wrapped in bacon and adorned with your choice of diced tomatoes or cucumbers, onions, mustard, melted cheese, avocado cream, salsa and fresh roasted chilies. Fortino's (whose stand operates nightly on the Plaza Alameda) moves to the church plaza on Sunday evening and is a favorite of the foreign community.
Whole & half BBQ chicken meals can be found every Sunday, either at the Tianguis or near the market. Also can be found daily next to the Tecate beer distributor before the hospital and on the left on the way out of town.
