Rancho La Puerta lies in a broad valley at the foot of the mystic
3885-foot Mt. Kuchumaa, sacred to the
Kumeyaay Tribesmen. Here the meandering Kumeyaay Creek meets the Tecate
River. Chaparral holds the slopes and foothills of the mountain in a
wild embrace. Huge and fantastic granite boulders surface from a sea of
blue when the wild lilacs bloom. Artemisia and sage scent the air.
When Edmond and Deborah Szekely arrived in June of 1940, the valley had
abundant water, well established vineyards and neighborly goats and
cows. This, according to Professor Szekely's research, was the most
perfect year 'round climate in the world.
Professor Szekely's goal was to teach modern man simple principles and
practices of good health and spiritual well being. His teachings were
inspired by ancient wisdom, traditions and the long journey of human
history. He spoke passionately of the need for human beings to live in
harmony with the laws of nature. Since 1940, Rancho La Puerta has
evolved from a rustic ranch to a refined, sophisticated destination
resort, yet it has remained true to its roots and original inspiration.
