OAXACA DOG RESCUE

our rescued friends Scruffy, Cleo, Guera, Gonzalez

Welcome to the Oaxaca Dog (and cat!) Rescue Site!

Oaxaca Dog Rescue was founded with one purpose in mind, to reduce the number of dogs and cats living without homes on the streets of Oaxaca, Mexico. ODR was founded in 2006 by Susan McGlynn, who has lived and worked in Oaxaca for over 15 years and has rescued, treated, and found homes for hundreds of street animals. It is now time to make the effort more formal.

For those of you who are not familiar with Oaxaca, Mexico, why not take a moment to acquaint yourself? Oaxaca is a lovely, colonial city in Southern Mexico known for its historic and cultural contribution to Mesoamerica. The famous ruins of Monte Alban and Mitla are just two of the arqueological wonders Oaxaca has to offer, giving the visitor a glimpse of the pre-hispanic lives of the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures. Oaxaca is widely known for its culinary tradition, as well as its rich tradition of artisans. It is here where the famous "alebrijes" (carved fantastic wood figures) and the world-famous Zapotec wool rugs are made. Here we have provided a link to a site that can provide more information about this fascinating mountain (over 5000 ft. elevation!) capital city and state. Visit All About Oaxaca to read more about Oaxaca and you'll see why we have chosen this magical city as our home and want to help it's animal population.

Unfortunately, Oaxaca has been having some civil unrest problems related to the discontent of the local citizens with the current government. During this time it is especially important not to forget the animals. They were leading a marginal existence to begin with, and now with the uncertainty that faces each oaxaqueno daily, the animals have been all but forgotten.

How can you help?

We are just getting started and have acquired the services of Dr. Armando Audelo Cruz, one of the best veterinarians in Oaxaca. Dr. Audelo has agreed to be our Medical Director Cuddly Kitty and he has the same dedication and commitment to the animals of Oaxaca as we have. He is well versed in the use of homeopathic remedies for illness and injuries of animals. This method is not only non-invasive, but so much less expensive than traditional medicines, that it only makes sense. And it has an amazing eficacy! We have many tales of illness that didn't require surgery because of the use of homeopathy, many lives have been saved due to this simple treatment.

In our quest to reduce the number of animals suffering daily, we are committed to spaying and neutering, administering vaccinations, deparasiting and treating the all too common skin diseases, such as mange. And we feed as many street animals as possible and try to find homes for the cute ones, unfortunately, the not-so-cute and old don't have much of a chance of finding a home (i have the same complaint!) so we try to make the rest of their lives as comfortable as possible.

We need funding!

to get off the ground and get our non-profit status! Oaxaca Dog Rescue is a registered corporation in the state of California, U.S.A. and we are very close to having our non-profit status. All the appropriate paperwork has been filed, all we are lacking is a $750 filing fee. Without non-profit status, it is very difficult to solicit donations, so it is crucial that Oaxaca Dog Rescue obtain its non- profit status, and during the year 2007 or the process must begin anew.

If you would like to help, please write to Susan at labrujita_oax@yahoo.com (that's labrujita(underscore)oax@yahoo.com) or send a donation to us so we can get our non-profit status:
