January the 6th is a special day in Mexico. Known as 'El Dia de Reyes' (Three Kings Day), this holiday represents the height of the Christmas season. The date marks the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas and commemorates the three wise men who traveled from afar, bearing gifts for the infant baby Jesus. The children of Mexico in particular look forward to this holiday as by tradition gifts are exchanged on this date and not on Christmas day.

Carnaval is an official Mexican holiday that kicks off a five-day celebration of the libido before the Catholic lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Beginning the weekend before Lent, Carnaval is celebrated exuberantly with parades, floats, costumes, music and dancing in the streets. Carnaval is equivalent to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Carnaval, it's a love of dance, music, friendship, fun and excitement. Calling it debauchery, as some do, is an unfair indictment. The Veracruz Carnaval, a right-before-Lent-Carnaval, like Mexico itself, is strongly family oriented. Even so, it's a dazzling event-pure fun and excitement and music and dance. The visuals are incredible and the party, of course, is non-stop.

The calendar date of March 18th, 1939, is remembered throughout the country as the day
of “La Expropiación Petrolera” (Oil Expropriation). President Lázaro Cárdenas (1934-1940) is the man responsible for securing Mexico’s vast oil profits for its citizens.
His act of nationalizing the nation’s oil fields remains in place today. The anniversary of the Oil Expropriation is a civic holiday.

For thousands of years in Mexico, a most remarkable dog has held center stage. This special dog, whose breed goes by the name of Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo for short, is best known for the fact it is hairless. The Aztecs deeply revered the Xolo and believed the breed to have mystical healing abilities.
