Ixtapa / Zihuatanejo Fishing Report |
| Weekly Report 1/03/00 |
Since the full moon the fishing for the giant tuna and blue marlin has been on the slow side. It is not that they are not here, it is just that there are not many boats going out the distance and covering the area to find them. Tuesday, I sent my son Ron and Captain Juan Pablo on a 240º heading out 45 miles and Wed. on a 180º heading for 32 miles. Tues. they caught and released an estimated 300lb blue marlin and Wed. raised 4 more with two 100lb class blue marlin caught and released. The "Intruza" had a typical catch for the fleet, who are mostly catering to the average tourist day fisherman. They landed two 25 lb dorado and two sailfish caught straight out of Zihuat Bay at a distance of 8 miles. The inshore fishing is still excellent with numerous sierras, barilettes, and chulas making up most of the catch. Captain Roberto Ramos on the panga "Martha/Ivonne" sampled this light tackle fishing for his clients and had a great day catching several dorado averaging 6 pounds, lots of sierra, and rounded it off with barilettes and jack cravalle. All the fish were caught on the back side of Ixtapa Island and in less than 200 feet of water. The seas have been exceptionally calm and glassed out with perfect weather. The bait supply is excellent. Ed Kunze
