The Dominican Cathedral, the Ex-Convent of the Immaculate Conception and the surrounding buildings ultimately
covered an entire city block, the streets are even built around the edges of the Church, so as not to disturb
this historical site. The church was completed in 1593 when the Dominicans were the only order in Puebla, and known
as the "barefoot conceptionists".
In 1862, by decree of then President Benito Juarez, the convent was taken away from the order, and like other
religious buildings throughout Mexico, was used by the Mexican Army during the battle of Cinco de Mayo in 1862.
It fell into disrepair and was threatened of losing its amazing frescoes and artwork, until in 1988 when a group
of investors who undertook the admirable task of lovingly restoring the Convent to the beatiful Hotel Camino
Real.
The Legend of The Ex-Convent of the Immaculate Conception...
The story goes that in 1598 a little Poblana girl, who was well-known all over town for being an instrument of God,
wanted to join the Convent but her father forbade her. One day she tricked
her brother into knocking on the door of the Convent to ask for water, and when the nuns answered, she ran in and
slammed the door behind her. There she remained her entire life, devoted to God, and was said to have had many
miracles and prophecies attributed to her, including predicting the arrival of the new Bishop Juan de Palafox y
Mendoza. The Catholic church named Teresa de Jesus "the little nun of Puebla" and declared her and
the Convent "venerable".
