Housing the major performances presented by the Fomento Cultural, the Clavijero Theater is located in the heart of old downtown Veracruz. It's tradition is long.

The first of its predecessors, dating from the 17th century, was a wooden structure that was lost to fire. In the early 19th century the second of its predecessors was likewise lost to fire.

The third, built some 15 years later, lasted intact into the early 20th century, when structural flaws required major reconstruction. Problems continued, and in 1968 a massive restoration produced the theater of today. The restoration design cut the capacity in half (current seating capacity is 634) and limited the seating to 3 levels.

Refurbished in 2000, the Clavijero, with its superior acoustics, is Veracruz's finest performing arts center and its stage is home to concerts, theatre, dance, and special events. The offices of the Fomento Cultural are located in the theater.

The Fomento Cultural de Veracruz, the Cultural Foment of Veracruz, came to be in 1999 as a purely voluntary public service organization committed to cultural and artistic activities presented for the benefit of residents and tourists.

The group formalized itself under the laws of Mexico in February 2001, and in July of that year entered into an agreement with the government of the city of Veracruz to plan and administer performances in the historic Theatro Clavijero. The FCV, the Cultural Foment, additionally plans and administers performances in other venues.

Since its formation, the FCV has dedicated itself to offering artistic events of the finest quality and in doing so, with passion and spirt, meets it promise to the citizenry.

The membership of the FCV has representation from the area's most important and prestigious cultural institutions including the University of Veracruz, and the Veracruz Institute of Culture.

It is with great appreciation that the FCV receives support from private benefactors. Donations are deductible in Mexico.
