  Ensenada Side Trips

Laguna Hanson
En route to San Felipe via Highway 3 (22 miles east of Ensenada) is Laguna Hanson, one of northern Baja's prime camping & wilderness areas, Camping is available amongst the pines by the lakes edge. Passenger cars can usually make the trip during the spring, summer and fall. The park is a campers delight with extraordinary natural beauty, hiking trails and awesome, starry evenings.

Facilities and supplies are usually unavailable. You may find some supplies in the small town of Ojos Negros before you climb up into the park. Please be well-prepared.

San Quintin
South to fishing & hunting country.
San Quintín is an important agricultural center located 119 miles south of Ensenada along the Transpeninsular highway (Hwy. 1). It is also one of the best areas on the Pacific coast for hunting and fishing.

The Road to Tecate
Through the wine country & into small town Mexico.
North of Ensenada on the toll road, Mexico's two lane Highway 3 winds northeast through the Valle de Guadalupe and Baja's famous winery regions, through chaparral & boulder-covered hills, eventually ending up in the peaceful border town of Tecate. It is a pleasant, quiet drive with many opportunities to stop and enjoy a bit of backcountry Mexico.

National Observatory
On the way to San Quintin, you'll find San Pedro Martir National Park & the National Observatory. Located near Baja's highest peak, Picacho del Diablo (3,086 meters/ 10,000 feet) is in the northern half of this rustic park.

The park itself was founded in 1947 and is one of Mexico's least visited. Sturdy vehicles are necessary for most trips (please inquire with Ensenadas Tourism Department befor going). The observatory was begun in 1967 and tours are given usually every Saturday at 11:00am. The views are breathtaking. Make sure you give yourself enough time to reach the Observatory.

To get here take Hwy. 1 towards San Quintin, take the San Telmo turnoff after passing through Colonet. Make sure you are sufficiently supplied before entering the park, especially if you plan on camping there.

Lodging consists of trailer parks around Colonet & San Vicente, or staying at the Meling Ranch on the road to the park. You can also stay at Mike's Sky Ranch off of Hwy. 3 (Ensenada-San Felipe) and take trips into the park.
