The Mexican government has just completed an extensive highway improvement project and the main highway from the border is not only freshly paved, but also widened for your safety. There is even a no cost traveling mechanic service, known as the Green Angels, for rapid response if you break down. Many visitors who enjoy air-travel take advantage of the daily, direct-flights from Phoenix into Guaymas or Hermosillo through Aeromexico or US Air. Since the Guaymas Marina expansion, there are now cruise lines that list Guaymas as a port of call. The Government of Mexico and the Department of Tourism has made the State of Sonora and the municipality of San Carlos the thrust for new development and growth and has funded large projects in support of this endeavor. In 2011, the main roads of San Carlos have all been repaved and the water system is continually being upgraded to accommodate the anticipated growth. Amongst other measures to encourage tourism and investment in San Carlos, the Government has made the area north of Guaymas all the way to the border the "free-zone" no longer requiring vehicle permits for foreign automobiles.
