THE STATE OF AGUASCALIENTES, AN OVERVIEW
One of the main features of Aguascalientes, is its sudden awakening as a very dynamic society, thanks to the development of a modern production infrastructure, coupled with social harmony and ecologically sound criteria.
The economic growth of this small but vigorous state, has reached 6.8% in the last five years, more than double the national average of 2.8%. The current employment rate come to 98% of the "economically active population". The state is one of the most stable in terms of worker-employer relations evidence by the fact that not a single strike has taken place in the last two decades. This positive attitude on the part of union and business leaders, is what has enabled us to make the timely adjustments needed in the arena of the new world-economy.
Aguascalientes is outstanding, at the national level, in areas such as urban infrastructure and services - it leads all other states in the supply of services such as running - water for housing units, sewer systems and electric power. In the area of educational services, 93% of our population is literate, which is above the national average and similar to the literacy rate countries like Spain and Chile. We have a healthy population - life expectancy is now over 70 years; there are 1.5 doctors per thousand inhabitants; and the public medical services practically cover the entire population.
In regard to housing, 74% of the families own the houses where they live, far above the 50% national rate, and greater than the figures reported in France, Japan, Canada, and Spain.
As a direct result of the local government support of productive activities and innovative marketing strategies, sales abroad have increased at the rate of 43% since 1986, reaching 180 million dollars in 1992, which resulted in a small trade surplus.
Aguascalientes is well positioned to move full-steam ahead into the 21st century. We are well aware that our future rests on our export capacity. World business leaders who have already located in the state, share our vision and, together with our local business community, our industrious labor force, and our imaginative policy makers, have joined hands and laid the foundation for a prosperous and happy society in this, "the state of the friendly people".
